At the AGM, ballet conductor JONATHAN LO will be interviewed by dance writer GRAHAM WATTS.

Hong Kong-born Briton Jonathan Lo is Music Director of The Australian Ballet, Northern Ballet, and Staff Conductor for the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.  He was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House and was a conducting fellow with Birmingham Royal Ballet, and company for whom he has returned to guest conduct regularly.

Hailed by Dance Europe as 'an exemplary ballet conductor who gets the best from the musicians without overriding the needs of the stage production and the dancers', Jonathan is increasingly sought after by ballet companies around the world.  Guest conducting highlights include Dutch National Ballet’s Hans van Manen celebrations and the company’s 60th Anniversary Gala, Zurich Ballet, Cape Town City Ballet, Scottish Ballet, and Rambert Dance Company.  His work has been broadcast live in cinemas across the world, on DVD, as well as on BBC and Sky television.  Jonathan’s repertoire ranges from the classics to numerous world premieres by some of the most sought-after choreographers of the age.

Jonathan made his Royal Opera House main stage debut with the Royal Ballet conducting Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour and Crystal Pite’s Flight Pattern, which was then immediately followed by return invitation in the following season before being appointed staff conductor.  Recent conducting credits include The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, The Weathering & DGV, Cinderella & Sleeping Beauty.  He was the conductor for the historic ‘Royal Ballet: Back on Stage’ gala.

Jonathan was appointed Music Director of Northern Ballet after making his debut as guest music director for the world premiere of Cathy Marston’s Victoria.  In 2022, it was announced that he would be taking up the position of Music Director with The Australian Ballet, after making his debut with the company in Cranko’s Romeo & Juliet.

Born in 1987, Jonathan read music at the University of Oxford, before going on to study conducting at Royal Northern College of Music on a major scholarship, graduating with distinction.  He has conducted in performance with orchestras around the world, most notably, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, London Sinfonietta, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and the Orchestra of the Sydney Opera House.
