Samara Downs is a Principal with Birmingham Royal Ballet. She trained at The Royal Ballet School, joined the Company in 2003 and was promoted to Principal in 2016. Performances include leading roles in all the major classical ballets, and in dramatic works such as The Taming of the Shrew, Carmina Burana and Checkmate. She is renowned for her sensitive interpretations of the English repertory, including leading roles in Ashton’s Enigma Variations, A Month in the Country and La Fille mal gardée.

 She is completing a Professional Diploma in Benesh Movement Notation with Benesh International and is part of the Ashton Stager’s Programme. Recent projects include the reconstruction of Ashton’s Scène d’amour and MacMillan’s Ballade, and she is currently reviving Ashton’s Lament of the Waves for The Frederick Ashton Foundation. She has staged works by MacMillan, Ashton and Bintley for The Royal Ballet School, Finnish National Ballet and London City Ballet, and teaches widely, holding a Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy and a Master’s in Dance Education.
