LONDON CHILDREN’S BALLET

BALLET FOR £1 – Anne of Green Gables

July 2nd 2026

Four members attended the matinee of Anne of Green Gables at the Peacock Theatre, London. This performance was part of the Ballet For £1 Programme run by the LCB. 2,000 tickets for just £1 are offered to primary school children from disadvantaged communities and to charities for the elderly and less able. LCB visit the participating schools running free ballet workshops with the aim of breaking down perceived barriers to ballet and classical music and to give the children some context of the performance they are about to see.

The show started with an introduction to some of the mime used within the production by three of the dancers. The auditorium was packed with enthusiastic and excited children (and adults!)

We watched a studio rehearsal of the ballet recently and were impressed with what we saw, which just made us even more keen to see the finished product. We were not disappointed. The large live audience brought out the best in these young dancers and they clearly love performing. The staging and costumes further added to the quality of ballet, and the narrative was easy to follow and enhanced by the characterisation. In the crowd scenes each dancer was telling their own story which felt very realistic, particularly as we were surrounded by young people.

Our thanks go to London Children’s Ballet for the opportunity to watch the rehearsal and the show, and to share it with such an enthusiastic auditorium of young people who clearly loved it and were engaged throughout the performance.
